Individual Counselling

Individual counselling services are offered to adults.  Counselling sessions are typically 50 minutes in length. The Therapist completes an Initial Assessment with the Client and recommends a treatment plan, including, frequency and duration of treatment, therapeutic modality and referral as required.

Why would I seek Counselling Therapy?

Counselling therapy is a helpful service for individuals who are experiencing barriers to function in one or more areas of life due to psychological symptoms. Common reasons for seeking counselling therapy include but not limited to: stressful or traumatic experiences; life transitions; prolonged anxiety or depression symptoms; loss. Distressing or uncomfortable emotions are a normal part of life. Counselling therapy helps an individual navigate their thoughts and emotions through a nonjudgemental and validating process.

What can I expect in a Counselling Session?

The therapist and client collaborate to explore a client’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours related to their concerns.  The therapist facilitates the development of therapeutic goals, treatment plan and interventions. The therapist uses various “tools” to achieve session goals, including, informal dialogue, structured interventions and psychoeducation. The Therapist uses interventions related to the treatment modality, including, worksheets and “homework” tasks for reflection and practice of the skills learned in counselling sessions.

How do I know that counselling is going to help me?

Client engagement, collaboration, communication and a trusting therapeutic relationship are key components of successful psychotherapy. Communication between a Therapist and Client regarding functional progress, concerns about the treatment plan and barriers to treatment goals contributes to desired treatment outcomes.
